The attic of St. Anthony's Church is distinguished by its glass roof, which allows light to flood in, diffusing effortlessly through its frosted glass floor to reach directly above the heart of the church.
This former attic, transformed into a jewel box of glass and light, is a secluded space at the top of the building that calls for transcendence as well as peaceful solitude. Like Saint Anthony himself, it invites retreat, a clearing of the mind, a release from the overflow of thoughts. Much like our own minds—quickly repopulated by fears and repressed desires—it too must be cleared once again.
During my performance, I used these suspended glass panels, poised between earth and sky, as a screen where the light revealed my ephemeral salt drawings, inspired by The Temptation of Saint Anthony by Gustave Flaubert.
In this mineral universe of glass, salt, and light, I seek to clear the space, to sweep away these ghosts, and to restore it to its original bareness, to its essence. Ultimately, it is light that I wish to speak of—the light that lifts us up or reveals our shadows.
